In the beginning paragraphs, I used the term labor union in its common context (coercive organization). I defended voluntary unions in the last paragraph, but I do not think that defending voluntary unions in the current system an effective strategy of achieve freedom. The non-voluntary unions would outcompete the voluntary ones. Additionally, voluntary unions would not exist much in a free society, so why waste time defending them?

It's actually my fault that I did not summarise my opposition to labor unions, including the voluntary ones, in an introductory paragraph. I have the right to hire an attorney or otherwise nominate someone to exercise my rights in my name. Groups of people also have this right, by simple addition. If a group of employees at a factory all deputize the same advocate, we have a labor union. This advocate is empowered by the consent of those who nominated him/her to negotiate with the factory owner to the benefit of the workers. If the result of that negotiation is that those workers' wages rise, good on them. No other workers are involved in this exchange. Nothing was taken from them which could legitimately be seized to pay them restitution.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
